You think you know when it works but you really don't. It seems to be going right, and everything starts to fall in line just like training and you are positive it is working. You talk to the other leaders, post on Twitter and chat on forums about how it is 'working' for you. And then it happens. And then you see it. And then it WORKS.
You've been standing on the mountain top, proud of your Scouts when you are really just on a cloudy ledge and the mist clears and you see the top. That is when it is really working. What is 'it'? The Patrol system, youth leadership, Scouting... it works. Eureka! ('I have found it' in Greek)
Stepping back and letting the Scouts take the lead is difficult for many of us. We have to summon an awful lot of courage and trust to really see this happen. Just as Bryan points out there is a point where you think you're really getting somewhere but all of a sudden, bingo!, you actually do get somewhere.
Yes there will still be times that 'it' doesn't seem to be working. But once you've really seen what the possibilities are you'll be confident that it can and will continue to work.
