Soda Can Popcorn
This looks like fun! I don't know why you'd have to sand the outside though.

Why Life to Eagle Guides?
I am SO doing this at our February Klondike Derby!

Looks like fun, but would this constitute a soda can stove?
Prohibited Chemical-Fueled Equipment—Equipment that is handcrafted, homemade, modified, or installed beyond the manufacturer’s stated design limitations or use. Examples include alcohol-burning “can” stoves, smudge pots, improperly installed heaters, and propane burners with their regulators removed. (from the G2SS)

This is different - it is not burning any fuel. This is a homemade pot, not a stove.

Agree with Clarke... this is just an improvised pot, not a "stove".
Going to try this a out Troop's survival challenge in 2 weeks. The campfire application seems a bit problematical- the collecting dish needs to be close to the can, therefore the fire, possible burning the pooped corn.

This is brilliant. In two weeks our boys are starting to work on the cooking merit badge as well as getting ready for a klondike derby in February. I think I'll build one as a demonstration to the fact that with a little creativity you can make meals more interesting and enjoyable.

What source are you referencing? The information you gave is not in the G2SS that I have or the one online from scouting.org.

Great idea. Can't wait to show this to the Troop at this month's outing. I had better have a lot of extra cans when I do.

There's a new edition of the G2SS that includes the ban on homemade liquid fuel stoves. You can see it online here:http://scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss07.aspx

My guess is that sanding the outside is optional if the can is painted. Many cans these days have a plastic coating that holds the image. Sanding would take off the burnable surface layer if any.
