ScoutTracker records individual rank advancement in a Scout's iPhone or iPod touch. The current version includes the January 1, 2010 rank requirements.
This simple, utilitarian and welcome way of tracking advancement is another demonstration of how useful an iPod, iPhone or similar device can be in Scouting. This is the missing piece to the Scout Handbook Application.
There are two features I find especially interesting; 'signatures' for completed advancements can either be typed or recorded by choosing from the users contact list and advancement information can be sent via email from the application.
One improvement would be a separate list of merit badges that automatically fills in the appropriate section of the Star, Life and Eagle requirements. I must add, though, that choosing merit badges to fulfill these requirements is very simple.
The $1.99 price is certainly fair. The BSA offers a mini version of the Scout Handbook (basically an rank advancement record booklet) for $3.99. I'll remind everyone that applications can be updated quickly and painlessly. I think Scout Tracker is an excellent reference and recording tool for Scouts and their leaders.
Scout Tracker Available at iTunes
We've come a long way with technology haven't we? I just had to comment on this since I am both an Eagle Scout and an owner of an iPhone. I will be downloading this app as soon as I am done commenting. I'm so excited I may even link this article on my website mypodcarkit.com!
