Pocket Universe is the best (and least expensive) of several astronomy applications I have purchased.
Pocket Universe has a simple to use yet a rich set of features. The planetarium-like display features a clear horizon, something other applications may lack causing a bit of confusion. Search functions that make it easy to find and identify constellations, planets and other objects. A moon atlas helps locate principal moon features and determine the moon phase. The 'Tonight's Sky' tab features daily observing information. There is enough information available without overwhelming the user and the functions are easy to learn. Some of the other astronomy apps were distractingly complicated.
I enjoyed challenging the constellation quiz to sharpening my observing skills. Team this app with an astronomy grade green laser pointer for a very informative star hike.
- Plots the position of the Sun, Moon and Planets (including Pluto)- Displays 10,000 stars, 88 Constellations, Messier objects
- Show Me mode for guidance to planets, constellations and stars
- Tonight's Sky creates a list of meteor showers and visible planets
- Constellation Quiz helps you learn your way around the sky
- Night vision option for observing turns most of the white lights in the application red preserving your night vision.
A real bargain at $2.99 Pocket Universe will aid you in exploring the night sky and explaining it to your Scouts.
Daylight is a free app that displays a 24 hour clock that shows sunrise, sunset, dawn dusk and amount of daylight remaining. A very useful app when answering questions like 'do we have enough time to hike there and back' or 'how much time do we have to make dinner before it's too dark to see? At present the app uses your iPod's location only but one can change the date. Will that weekend in November have enough daylight for your proposed activity? Now you can find out with a minimum of fuss.
On the clock noon is straight up, midnight straight down, the hour hand indicates the time of day, day is light blue, night is dark blue and dawn and dusk are in between.
The developer promises some additional features in the future.
